Pancake Breakfast at Armstrong Elementary
Armstrong Elementary was a sea of excitement as staff and students enjoyed a school-wide pancake breakfast supported by the Feeding Futures program on Friday, March 15, 2024.
Grade 4 and 5 leadership students and many wonderful parent helpers cooked up pancakes to feed over 300 people. It was a great experience for the leadership students as they were “hired” into positions as cooks, servers, cleanup and operations staff. The student cooks did the cooking of the pancakes, starting at 7:10 a.m. under the watchful eye of parent helpers. Two classes at a time came into the gym and were seated at the tables by the student operations helpers, and then served pancakes by the student serving staff. Pancakes were topped with syrup and fruit.
It was really a community feeling in the gym as the two classes were buddy classes and sat with the older and younger students completely mixed in together. The older buddies were fantastic at helping the younger students and modeled excellent table manners. All 12 divisions had their time to eat and then the hungry leadership students enjoyed their meal at the end of the event.
Principal Val Edgell commented they very thankful to the many parents who volunteered their morning to make this a success, and also to Serena Caner and the Feeding Futures program for their support with funding the breakfast and helping to pick up the supplies ahead of time. “The leadership students did an amazing job and really got a taste of how much work it is to put on an event of this size. They cooked well over 1000 pancakes!”
