Challenge accepted!

Posted on 2019-06-21 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

The challenge was to create and develop a prototype a of a new community pool and splash park and 40 students from the SD83 Inclusive Education/Gifted Program took it on with gusto!

The students, from grades three to eight in schools across the district, came together to participate in the second annual Maker Day held at the District Education Centre on May 22.

The teams needed to create a design for the “real world” problem of a new community pool and splash park that was inclusive, multi-age and fun for all. They had many factors to consider including: issues of mobility, access, sensory challenges, and the age of community members.

Using the process of design thinking, the students, along with members of the Instructional Leadership Team, spent time learning about the needs of community pool and splash park and the challenges that come with designing one for all ages and abilities.

They then put their knowledge towards creating individual, partner and group designs before coming up with a final prototype build.

Parkview Elementary Grade 3 student Kealan wasn’t able to take part in the Maker Day at the DESC but didn’t want to miss out on the challenge so he and a couple of fellow students created and built this prototype at Parkview!

Leslie Drinovz, Inclusive Education/Gifted teacher, reports there were many creative ideas constructed and the students were excited to add their ideas that was inclusive for all adults and children to play alongside one another. An inclusive pool and splash park  shows that everyone has value and that everyone can be together and have fun.

She added there was an incredible amount of engagement throughout the entire day and many new friendships were formed. “We look forward to offering an equally exciting opportunity next year.”
