Energy Map at Len Wood

Thanks to a gym-sized map from Canadian Geographic, students at Len Wood Middle had the opportunity to learn about the topical subject of energy production and transmission.

The giant floor map is produced by Canadian Geographic and was at the school for February 10 and 11 before moving on to its next location. The grade 7/8 teachers used the map to show students that energy is produced in many different places and in many different ways all across Canada.

Students learned about the complex transmission lines that crisscross across the country and explored Canada’s power generation stations, oil refineries, wind farms and more.

Stuart Matthews’ class learns about energy production and transmission in Canada. One interesting fact, Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world combined.

Former SD83 principal and scientist in residence at Len Wood (through a three year grant from WILD BC), Kim Fulton said the map is a great learning tool.

“I think the Canadian Geographic Giant Energy Map was a fabulous way to familiarize students with energy use and transmission in Canada. The students were very engaged with the “hands on/ feet on” approach. The huge map really helps bring the enormity and diversity of Canada into focus. This is appropriate for science and the humanities bringing in geography and energy production. Teachers might want to consider bringing the map to their schools and invite parents to participate. It is available free from Canadian Geographic.”
