Exploring the Canoe Creek Watershed
South Canoe students were out on the land last week, partnering with land owners, Dr. Fish (Environmental Educator Kim Fulton), Yertle the Turtle, and biologist Jeremy Ayotte.
In preparation for the K-12 Environmental Expo at Piccadilly Mall during Earth Week, grade 5/6 students from Ceren Caner’s class were learning about the Canoe Creek watershed and brainstorming ways to protect it.
Evolving project ideas include creating inventories of mammals, planting willow trees to stabilize the banks of the creek, removing invasive species, and monitoring the aquatic invertebrates as well as the water quality. As they prepare for the Expo, they look forward to sharing their research and findings, advocating for environmental stewardship and inspiring others in the broader community.
Land-based learning and enriching student experiences is part of the intellectual pillar of SD83’s Strategic Plan.
