Indoor Winter Wonderland for Unplug & Play
An indoor Winter Wonderland, complete with forest, music, games and hot chocolate greeted young learners and their families at the District Education Support Centre’s StrongStart on January 30.
The special event was organized by the DESC’s StrongStart program as part of the Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap’s Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week, which ran from January 25 to February 1. Unplug and Play featured many different types of free, fun events that foster literacy, physical activity, creativity and social connection for families to enjoy!
Some 20 children and 14 adults attended the Winter Wonderland, which included a music and movement session led by Roxy Roth from In the Groove Studio, winter-themed activities such as building a fort with (fake) ice blocks, free books, and a hot chocolate snack time.
Unplug & Play and Family Literacy Week encourages children and families to unplug from their screens and explore different ways of spending time together.
The Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week activities, which strengthen connections between families, schools, and community, as well as providing opportunities for literacy and physical literacy growth, support the District’s strategic priorities of intellectual development, human and social development, and community partnership development goals.
