Physical literacy is important too!

Posted on 2023-06-20 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

The school physical activity and physical literacy pilot project continues to be huge success in SD83 schools!

Three SD83 employees and physical literacy mentors – Tricia Martin, Leah Jaques and Laura Paiement- have been working with six teachers in five elementary schools, supporting teachers in developing their competence and confidence in helping students improve their physical literacy skills and increase their daily physical activity.

These physical literacy mentors have been assisting teachers in helping their students improve their physical literacy skills not only in the gym, but also in the hallways (indoor movement paths), outside (outdoor movement paths and on the playground), and in the classroom. While lots of learning is happening for both the teachers and the students, everyone is saying how much fun they are having as well and look forward to the times when the physical literacy mentors are in the schools.

The school physical activity and physical literacy project is a pilot project that is completely funded by the Ministry of Health. Physical Literacy is having the confidence, competence, and motivation to be active for life which not only impacts one’s physical health but also their mental wellbeing, ability to self-regulate, and ability to learn. This project will continue in the coming years, working with teachers who have not participated in the mentorships as well as returning to support teacher who have already participated in the full mentorship.
