Students Build Eco-Friendly Christmas Trees

Posted on 2025-01-07 08:00:00 +0000 UTC

In a heartwarming display of community collaboration, Ray Mills from Gorman Bros. Lumber gave the students of Salmon Arm Secondary’s Individual Achievement Program (IAP) a meaningful opportunity to learn about sustainable forestry practices, and craft unique, eco-friendly Christmas presents for their families, reports Teacher Kathleen Miege.

Mills shared his knowledge of BC’s forestry industry, giving a lesson on responsible logging practices, such as how planting trees and maintaining healthy forests are essential for the planet’s future. “It was a powerful reminder of how businesses like Gorman Bros. Lumber are leading the way in environmental stewardship, working to preserve our forests for future generations,” said Miege.

The IAP students were thrilled with the project. With the help of Ray Mills and David Miege, they spent hours crafting four-foot-tall Christmas trees, using wood donated by Gorman Bros. Lumber, organized by Chris Shelton and Aaron Cannon. One student shared their excitement, saying, “This will be the best Christmas present ever!” And indeed, it was — a gift not only to their families but also to the planet.

Through this project, the students gained valuable skills and confidence. More importantly, they experienced the power of community collaboration. This initiative highlights the importance of giving back to the local community while also teaching youth about environmental responsibility, adds Miege.

“Thank you, Ray Mills and the team at Gorman Bros. Lumber, for teaching us all how to be part of a greener, better world.”

This program is just one of the activities taking place at the school that illustrates the work being done under the District Strategic Plan goal of Human and Social Development, to ensure safe, inclusive spaces exist in our school for all students, and to develop strong connections between students, their peers, and community. By engaging in projects like these, students develop a sense of belonging, responsibility, and the importance of contributing to a sustainable future.
