Students Do Well at BC Public Speaking Event

Posted on 2025-04-23 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

Two local students participated in the DHHproud-Showcase held April 7, 2025, at the Michael J. Fox Theatre at Burnaby South High School. This event, sponsored by the Provincial Outreach Program for students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, features art, American Sign Language Poetry, and a Spotlight communication competition for students across B.C. who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Julia Couch, a Grade 8 student at Shuswap Middle School, won third in the public speaking competition while Annabelle Karbowski, a Grade 6 student at Len Wood Middle, finished just out of the top three. The public speaking competition could be done orally or using ASL. The topic for the competition was My Vision for a Hard of Hearing Friendly World.

Annabelle, who goes by Bella, took part in the poetry event at a previous event, but this was her first time in the public speaking competition.

Kristina Baker, SD83’s teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing, accompanied the students to the event and reports that both students performed really well and were excellent ambassadors for the school district. She noted that the girls worked hard on their speeches and it showed!

“The event is such a great experience,” she added. “The kids get to meet other deaf and hard of hearing students from throughout the province and they develop friendships.” She explained that the day after the competition is always reserved for a friendship day, which this year took place at the Vancouver Aquarium. “It’s the one competition that you go to that nobody wants to win,” she laughed. “If you win first, you can’t compete again. So, everyone hopes for second or third because it is such a great event to take part in.”

Julia and Annabelle’s participation in the DHHproud-Showcase allows them to showcase their talents, connect with peers, and gain confidence, while supporting the goals of our Strategic Plan. The event reflects the District’s commitment to creating inclusive, supportive, and engaging education environments.
