Students Fundraise for Children’s Hospital

The Grade 3/4 Class at Carlin Elementary Middle School recently held a student-planned fundraiser and raised over $300 for the BC Children’s Hospital.

“I’m so excited to share that our fundraiser was a big success! The students put on an incredible event, selling baked goods and homemade items — and their hard work truly paid off,” reports teacher Shelby Shuster.

She adds that this project has been months in the making, and the amount of effort, thought, and care that the young students put in to it was amazing to see. “The students planned the entire fundraiser from start to finish. They made items, created posters, wrote and delivered announcements, organized roles, and met regularly to keep things on track. Their leadership, collaboration, and enthusiasm is truly inspiring.”

“I’m incredibly proud of the dedication these students showed — and even more so, their compassion and initiative in supporting a cause they care about. It’s moments like these that remind me how bright their futures are, and how they will continue to shine their light into all corners of the earth as they carry through life. “

Shuster expresses her thanks to parents, friends, and families who supported the students along the way. “Whether you helped bake, donated items, made purchases, or encouraged them behind the scenes, your support helped make today such a special experience for them.” She also expressed thanks to the school principal, Carla Schneider, for supporting the fundraiser from the beginning, and to Indigenous Education Support Worker Jen Sharp, who provided her room for students to prepare and helped them stay organized, motivated, and on track throughout the process.

This project fits in Carlin’s Strategic Plan under Human and Social Development, particularly the goal of belonging, as well as developing a culture of well-being. It also beautifully reflects the career pillar in SD83’s Strategic Plan, as students developed communication, collaboration, and organizational skills while exploring how their interests and values can make a positive impact in their community. It also supported their growth in goal-setting, leadership, and personal responsibility – key competencies in becoming engaged, confident citizens.
