Bus Driver Training Requirements

Font Size: A+ A- Reset

School District No. 83 School Bus Drivers are responsible for the safe transportation of our students to and from school. Successful interview candidates participate in extensive training to make sure that they are a good fit and will uphold our safety protocols.

TRAINING OVERVIEW & REQUIREMENTS

SAFETY protocols are non-negotiable as we are transporting children and young people.

  1. The first eight hours of training is unpaid.
  2. After eight hours, the school district will begin paying for the remainder of the training program.
  3. Training can take anywhere from two weeks to two months and encompasses driving, pre-trip training, student loading & unloading procedures, student management, etc.
  4. After successfully completing the training, the new trainee is added to our spare board list and becomes an employee of School District No. 83.  As a spare driver, there is no guarantee of any number of hours; however, our spare drivers are usually quite busy.
  5. Our district covers a wide area, and we expect our spare drivers to be willing to go where we need them, so there may be some travel involved.
  6. The job is a split shift (morning and then afternoon), and our regular routes are a minimum of 4 hrs/day.  We have a couple of regular routes that are 7.75 hrs/day, but those are usually held by drivers with the most seniority.

Requirements:

  1. Class 2 License and Air Brake endorsement or Class 1 License (which includes the Air Brake endorsement)
  2. A clean driver’s abstract.
  3. It helps to have previous experience working with children.
  4. The ability to take safety processes and procedures very seriously knowing that we are transporting children.

**We have also started training interested individuals to obtain their Class 2 license when time permits.  This training takes approximately six weeks, is unpaid, and does not make the trainee a School District No. 83 employee.  Upon obtaining the Class 2 license, individuals must start the regular School District No. 83 school bus driver training program listed in the six points above.  Requirements for this type of training: Class 2 Learner’s License, Air Brakes, clean abstract and flexibility in hours of training.
