Bands do well at jazz festivals
The SD83 music program is always busy and recently several bands took part in a couple of music festivals, including the 43rd annual Interior Jazz Festival in Kelowna from April 7-9.
Salmon Arm Secondary (Sullivan) music teacher Nick Everett reports the bands had a great time, earning silver! “Our bands represented Salmon Arm very well, and worked professionally with the adjudicator. ” This year the adjudicators at the festival included Campbell Ryga, Michael Perkins, Bob Rogers, Nicolas Dyson, and Kimberly Kleineberg.
He noted the SAS band was able to work with Nicholas Dyson, a trumpeter. “He had some great ideas for the band which was nice to see.” Local students also had the opportunity to hear some of the other bands perform, which is always a good learning experience.
The Jackson Jazz Band also participated at the Interior Jazz Fest and received a gold rating. Callum Orchard (drums) and Milana Mazzotta (tenor sax) were recognized for their outstanding performances by the adjudicator. Also, at the recent Shuswap Music Festival April 11-30, Jackson Band was awarded “Best Jazz Band” and “Best Secondary School Concert Band”.
Also at the Shuswap Music Festival the A.L. Fortune Grade 8 band captured top spot in its category!
Mark your calendar! You will be able to hear some of these talented students at the annual Big Band Dance, which will be held at Salmon Arm Secondary on June 9 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
