Centennial Celebration!
Armstrong Elementary School is 100 years old this year and a community celebration is being held to mark the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 14.
Principal Corrinne Langston comments that on Friday, May 13 there will be a small school celebration to honour the parent community of AES. “Students and staff are excited as the school’s talented music teacher Ethan Faris and Maypole Dance Club teachers, Heather Ramsey, Cami Monsigneur, Susan Brown, and retired secretary Debbie Brown, are putting the finishing touches on the performance which is planned for Friday, May 13 at 10 a.m.”
“The performance is dedicated to our parent community and in particular our PAC and provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate the 100th year of learning at the Brick School! We have planned performances that will showcase the talents of our students and we have invited many special guests including Helen Sidney to speak at the event. The program should last about 90 minutes,” she adds.
“We hope families will stay for a picnic on our beautiful grounds. Our staff at AES are so grateful for our parent community. Everyone helps out in so many ways. To honour and thank you for your support, we offer this small gesture of appreciation. We hope you can join us.”
Then, on Saturday May 14 the community is invited to come and celebrate! Plans for the day include entertainment by alumni Paul Moore, the AES Maypole Club, the Pleasant Valley Secondary School band, and Len Wood Middle School’s drumline, guided classroom tours hosted by volunteer alumni, staff and students, a treasure hunt led by former teacher Kim Fulton, and a hands-on artifact display curated by the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum & Art Gallery. On display will be the new mural project featuring 100 Years of Learning and the newly renovated AES library.
Of course, there will also be lots of time to catch up with former teachers, alumni and friends. “Helen Sidney will be in attendance and can’t wait to reunite with her former students,” comments Langston.
This centennial event is being hosted in partnership by Armstrong Elementary School, AES Parent Advisory Council, City of Armstrong, Township of Spallumcheen, Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce, Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum, student and staff alumni.
