Cross country running meet

Local runners did well in the high school North Zone cross country championships held at Little Mountain Park on Oct. 19.

Highlights include Salmon Arm Secondary (Sullivan) runners winning both the Senior Boys’ and Senior Girls’ pennants. In Junior Girls, it was Revelstoke claiming first, with Jackson in second, and Shuswap Middle School (SMS) capturing third. In the Junior Boys category Seaton won first, SMS was second, and Jackson was third.

Runners from Vernon (Fulton, Seaton, Kalamalka, and Vernon Secondary), Revelstoke, Armstrong (PVSS), and Salmon Arm (Sullivan, Jackson and SMS) took part in the North Zone Championships.

In the Senior Boys 5.5 km run first through third was a SAS Sullivan sweep as Sam Calkins captured first in a time of 24:31 minutes. Jonathan Breugem was second at 24:34 and Frankie Ayotte was third at 24:35. SAS Sullivan runners Kevin Scott, Simon Bakker, Lucas Hansen, Callum Orchard and Ian Van Bergeyk also placed in the top 10.

In the senior girls’ 5.5 km race, Alexandra Luxmoore of Revelstoke Secondary was first at 26:38 minutes. Second went to Isabella Pighin of Fulton at 27:12, and third to SIri Dausend of Seaton at 28:02. SAS Sullivan’s Taylor Menzies, Hazel Brooks, Emma Muddiman, Kate Verdurmen and Callie Vicars placed sixth through ninth in the race which had 26 runners.

In the junior girls’ 3.7 km race there were 36 runners with first going to Kiara Pighin of Fulton at 15:45 minutes. Madeleine Wilkie of Jackson was second coming in at 16:07 while Zoey Crosby of Revelstoke crossed the line at 16:16 to take third. Jackson runners Lucy King and Grace Lazar, as well as Shuswap runners Etoile Brown and Lily Ewanyshyn and Keira Cadden finished in the top 12.

In the junior boys’ 3.7 km race the top three spots went to Seaton with Simon Heidt at 14:39, Luke Mitchell at 14:50, and Mavi Arora at 15:08. The top SD83 runner was Max Calkins of Jackson at 15:24 in fourth and Ian Orchard of SMS in fifth at 15:30. There were 35 runners in this race. Locals finishing in the top 12 were Jared Peterson of Shuswap and Peter Liebich of Jackson.
