Dietitian helping schools
Serena Caner is a registered dietitian working in School District No. 83 (North Okanagan-Shuswap) to support schools in their food programming. This includes helping schools meet the mandated Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in BC schools, as well as connecting schools with potential funding sources and food skills programming at the school.
SD83 has received a grant from Interior Health to undertake a needs assessment of all food initiatives at each school. The scope of this grant includes collecting data on the numbers of students who may not have regular access to healthy foods at each school, the current food skills and meal programs offered at each school, and how they are run (volunteer/paid staff) and funded.
The goal is to get a picture of how food is promoting a culture of health and wellness in our schools and to help schools ensure they are offering foods that meet the Guidelines for Food & Beverage Sales in B.C. Schools
Serena will also be sending out “Nutrition Bites” for schools to share with parents!
