District Name Change Ceremony
On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the District celebrated a significant milestone with a Name Change Ceremony hosted by the Quelmúcw Education Council and the Indigenous Education Department. This momentous event honoured the District’s gifted Secwépemc name, K̓wsaltktnéws ne Secwepemcu’lecw, symbolizing a deep connection to the land, culture, and shared commitment to Reconciliation.
The new District name, K̓wsaltktnéws ne Secwepemcu’lecw, means that we are all connected (people, animals, land, air, and water) on Secwepemc land.
While the District name was already officially changed in a Board decision at the September Board Meeting, this ceremony and celebration was a milestone for the Quelmúcw Education Council and the local First Nations communities, in recognizing this important and meaningful step for the District.
The evening began with a land acknowledgment and warm welcome from Director Chelsea Prince and District Principal Kristen Crawford.
Elder Lucy Williams from the Adams Lake Indian Band shared a welcome message and words of gratitude.
A Welcome Song, led by Dodie Jones, Splatsin Knowledge Keeper, filled the space with a spirit of unity and respect.

Messages followed from Superintendent Donna Kriger and Board Chair Corryn Grayston, along with representatives from local Secwépemc communities: Councillor Diane Jules (Adams Lake Indian Band), Councillor Mindy Dick (Neskonlith Indian Band), Education Manager Tammy Thomas (Skwlax te Secwepemcúl’ecw), and Councillor Crystal Morris (Splatsin).
The ceremony concluded with Dodie Jones leading the Honour Song. Following the formal program, attendees gathered to share a meal and watch the newly created Name Change video, which further highlighted the importance and meaning of this historic occasion.
The District extends its gratitude to all who contributed to this memorable event and looks forward to continuing the journey of Reconciliation.
