Gateway to Trades
Learning about various trades and a satisfying finished project were just some of the things mentioned by Eagle River Secondary students Mikki Horsfield and Andrew Oystryk as they talked about being part of the school’s Gateway to Trades program at the School District No. 83 (North Okanagan-Shuswap) Board of Education meeting at the school on Tuesday.
Mikki and Andrew discuss program
The program, which is in conjunction with Okanagan College, gives students an opportunity to learn about several trades, including carpentry, plumbing, sheet metal and electrical.
One of the projects undertaken by the students was building raised garden boxes with several well thought out finishes to make them work better and last longer. The boxes will be used to transplant the plants currently growing in the school’s greenhouse and, when ready to harvest, will be used by the school’s cooking class.
