Governor General Award Winner
Congratulations to 2024 Graduate Hazel Brooks, who was recently awarded the Governor General’s Medal for being the top academic student at Salmon Arm Secondary during the 2023-2024 school year.
On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, Salmon Arm Secondary vice-principal Rhys Waters proudly recognized Hazel as the Governor General award recipient. This award is given to the top academic student at each school. Hazel, who is currently studying sciences at Simon Fraser University, has her sights set on a career in the medical field.
The Governor General’s Academic Medals recognize outstanding scholastic achievements in Canada. They are awarded to the student graduating with the highest average from high schools, and approved college or university programs. Created in 1873 by Lord Dufferin, Canada’s third Governor General after Confederation, these medals encourage academic excellence and have become the most prestigious award for Canadian students.
This summer, Hazel will return to Salmon Arm to work and reconnect with her community. Inspired by her younger brother Oliver, who has complex healthcare needs, Hazel is passionate about improving medical services in rural areas.
When asked what advice she would offer this year’s graduates, Hazel shared, “Just live in the moment and don’t think too hard about the future.”
Congratulations, Hazel, on your outstanding achievements and bright future!
