Governor General Award
Work hard, be self disciplined, and make sure to take time to relax with friends and yourself and do things you love. This is the advice the 2022 Governor General Award winner from Salmon Arm Secondary, Alexa Robinson, has for other students.
Alexa was presented with her certificate and the Governor General’s Academic Medal for outstanding scholastic achievement on Monday, June 5 by Salmon Arm Secondary Sullivan campus vice-principal Noah Ralston. She was appreciative for the award and acknowledged the hard work and self discipline it took. For Alexa, her passion outside of school was dance.
For nearly 150 years, the Governor General’s Academic Medals have recognized the outstanding scholastic achievements of students in Canada. They are awarded to the student graduating with the highest average from a high school, as well as from approved college or university programs. The program was created by Lord Dufferin, Canada’s third Governor General after Confederation, created in 1873 to encourage academic excellence across the nation. Over the years, they have become the most prestigious award that students in Canadian schools can receive.
This last year, Robinson continued with academic studies at Saint Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. She saw the transition to university as a chance to go somewhere new and different. Robinson is studying Kinesiology and a minor in Health Science with a longer term goal of medical school. She is developing her skills while working at the hospital in Salmon Arm this summer and saving up for next year. She looks forward to returning to studies in the fall and reconnecting with many of the new friends she has made there.
Governor General award winners will be recognized at each SD83 high school, depending on when the recipient is available.
