National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Posted on 2022-09-04 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

September goes by quickly so we just want to give parents a heads up about activities which will be taking place at the end of the month. North Okanagan-Shuswap School District No. 83 will be observing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Friday, September 30, so schools will be closed on this day.

This day addresses one of the 94 calls to action of The Truth and Reconciliation Commission which states: “We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process”.

Orange Shirt Day activities will be taking place at our schools before the 30th. Please watch for information in your child’s school newsletter. Also, on September 29 an official District event will be held at a school (to be determined) as well as a recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at the DESC.
