North Canoe Hosts Coldest Night of the Year Walk

Posted on 2025-03-06 08:00:00 +0000 UTC

North Canoe Elementary students collected non-perishable food donations to help combat hunger in the community during its own “Coldest Night of the Year” walk on Thursday, February 20.

All 73 students, along with their teachers, support staff, and Director of Instruction (Elementary) Jen Findlay took part in the hour long walk through the community of Canoe.

Students collected non-perishable food donations that were left outside of homes.  Community members also delivered food to the school, all of which will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank to support their efforts in combating hunger.  The school team also raised over $100 for Coldest Night fundraiser.

When they returned to the school, students and staff gathered in the gym for a reading of “Stone Soup” and a delicious lunch prepared by the grade 4/5 class and staff from Shuswap Food Action.

“It was a real pleasure to join all the students and staff on the walk throughout the Canoe community. We ended back in the gym to listen to the story, Stone Soup, and then delicious soup was provided for all students and staff,” said Findlay. Findlay expressed thanks to the organizers of the fantastic school/community event.

Some members of the school community then participated in the community Coldest Night of the Year walk on Saturday, February 22.
