Outdoor program completes first year

Posted on 2019-08-27 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

Hard to believe that only one year ago, SD83 was still ‘planning’ to open our Outdoor Program at South Canoe.

With the incredible hard work of staff, strong parent and community support the program and school are thriving.  South Canoe’s Outdoor Learning Program started with 95 students and a ribbon cutting ceremony (outside of course). From the morning drum beat (rather than a bell), through rain and snow to a wonderful year end, South Canoe has been an educational and outdoor learning success.

SD83 is pleased to announce that there are 34 kindergarten students registered and 116 students overall when the school year begins in September, with a team ready to take Outdoor Learning even further. The school will expand to a K-7 for the upcoming school year.

A number of other districts are now visiting us and modelling their potential outdoor programs on ours.  The biggest challenge for the program will soon be space. As program continues to expand, the district will be looking for possibilities in other schools and locations.

Assistant Superintendent Carl Cooper extends his personal thank you to the hard-working team at South Canoe, and to the community for its incredible support.
