Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday

Posted on 2022-02-22 08:00:00 +0000 UTC

SD83 schools will join thousands of others across Canada and the world recognizing Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, Feb. 23. Students and staff are showing their support for the anti-bullying movement by wearing pink, as well as other activities!

This Pink Shirt Day, the focus is working together and treating others with dignity and respect with the slogan “Be bold, Be brave, Be kind” and encouraging healthy self esteem, empathy, compassion and kindness. The aim is to help create a more kind, inclusive world by raising awareness and funds for anti-bullying initiatives.

Many activities are happening in schools through the district, however one campaign is already in full swing! Salmon Arm Secondary (Sullivan) secretary Lisa Martin sold pink shirts to raise funds for a buddy bench for a school within SD83. The lucky school this year will be South Canoe Elementary!

Silver Creek is having an assembly teaching kids about bullying and kindness. They will be wearing pink shirts and a small group of kids are baking cookies to hand out randomly on February 23.

Hillcrest is planning a Kindness Walk/Rally. They will be walking through the Hillcrest neighbourhood to spread messages of kindness, inclusion, and caring for each other.

At Len Wood Middle School class reps have planned Kindness Week to wrap around Pink Shirt Day! They have organized activities for all the students including giving students stickers to share with someone who is kind to them, wearing pink and having a Please and Thank You Day, where the focus is on manners. On Thursday there is a food drive for the Armstrong Food Bank and the week ends with High Five Friday! Each student will get a colourful paper high five to write a positive message on to share in a display. School Principal Denise Moore comments the reps have done an amazing job planning the week.
