Provincial track and field finals
SD83 students represented themselves well as hundreds of student athletes from around the province took part in the BC School Sports Track & Field Provincial Championships in Langley June 9-11. The North Okanagan-Shuswap athletes set many personal bests and brought home three medals!
All three medals were won by Grade 8 students. North Shuswap Elementary’s Carver Spooner won silver in javelin, Vienne Bredick of Shuswap Middle School came home with a bronze in high jump, and Jessica Rands of A.L. Fortune won a bronze in javelin with a throw of 24.30 metres, just one centimetre behind the silver medal winner.
Also from A.L.Fortune, Kaelan Zacharias threw a personal best in junior boys javelin with a throw of 38.61 m, good for 12th place while Jacob Simpso managed 9.56 m to take 18th place in junior boys shot put. Declan Saner competed in the junior boys 1,500 m racewalk. He would have placed 23rd, but he was disqualified in the final 100 m for not holding the proper form. So close! Spencer Watts also accompanied the team on the trip.
With the Pleasant Valley Secondary School team, both girls’ relay teams set personal best times. Ila Isaac finished 15th in the junior girls’ high jump, and Anna Melvin finished 10th in long jump.
Victoria Itterman from Eagle River Secondary achieved a personal best in shot put tossing it 8.95 metres.
Sullivan and Jackson athletes also had a good meet at provincials with many achieving their personal best times or distances over the weekend. The top results were: Eric Moore was eighth in senior men’s high jump and Sam Calkins finished tenth in senior men’s 2000m steeplechase.
