School Bus Safety Week

Posted on 2022-10-18 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

It is School Bus Safety Week October 16-22. The theme this year is Safely Rolling to My Destination!

SD83 Transportation Manager Andrea Kathrein comments school bus safety week is a time to raise awareness about keeping students safe on and around our school buses. She said bus drivers are currently running evacuation training with students. Also, starting soon, several of SD83’s bus driver and Buster (a remote-control mini bus) are presenting a bus safety program to students in kindergarten.

She noted one worrying trend over the last several years which she needs the public’s help to change, is drivers passing the bus when the red lights are flashing. She noted this is when children are most vulnerable as they are entering or unloading from the bus. “Local RCMP have also been very supportive in trying to help deter this trend.”

When a bus turns on YELLOW flashing lights this means it is preparing to stop. Slow down and get ready to stop.

Students should be waiting at the bus stop 3-5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.  The school bus runs on a strict schedule and by being ready, the bus is able to be on time for all of the following stops.

Parents are responsible for the safety of their children to and from the bus stop. Accompany small children to the bus stop, ensure they are adequately dressed and stand quietly in a group while waiting for the bus.
