Students compete at High School Mountain Bike Provincials
Students from Shuswap Middle School, Jackson and Sullivan were part of the 404 racers at the BC High School Mountain Bike Championships at Red Mountain in Rossland on May 27.
The locals pre-rode the course on the 26th and then raced the following day. Racers did the cross country race in the morning and then took part in the two stages of the enduro competition in the afternoon. A cross country race is timed the entire length of the course while an enduro race is timed only on the downhill descent. Racers must compete in both the cross country and enduro segments.
Although the local racers did not claim podium finishes they competed well. There were nine locals in the senior boys (112 racers in this category) with two top 20 finishes. There were 14 people in the senior girls but no local competitors. There were 94 competitors in the junior boys (grade 10) with two local and 14 participants in the junior girls with one local.
In the juvenile girls (grade 9) there were 14 competitors with no locals while the juvenile boys had 82 competitors, eight local racers and four top 20 finishes.
In the bantam girls (grade 8) there were 17 competitors and one racer from SMS, and in the bantam boys there were 57 competitors, three from SMS and one top 20 finisher!
The Sullivan and Jackson team is coached by teacher Chris Stromgren and SMS is coached by teacher Kira Limber.
Congrats to all who took part in this event!
