Third Place at the Mountain Bike Championships

Posted on 2025-05-29 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

Congratulations to Teagan Currie of Salmon Arm Secondary who captured third place in the Enduro race at the B.C. High School Mountain Bike Championships at Powell River on May 22-23!

The SD83 team, coached by teacher Chris Stromgren, included 19 racers from Shuswap, Jackson, and Salmon Arm Secondary.

The Enduro race was held on the Mount Mahoney trail system in excellent conditions. Currie, who was racing with a broken hand sustained in the Revelstoke Enduro the week before, still managed to finish in the medals!

The students competed in the Enduro race on May 22 and the cross country race on May 23. The Enduro and XC race courses took place on trails that are designated Blue and Black level of difficulty. Blue trails are intermediate-level and have technical features such as rocks, roots and drops that require competent mountain bike riders. Black trails have a steep grade and use technically demanding man-made features and jumps require a competent rider with a confident level of skill. All race categories had both Blue and Black trails in their assigned race courses.

In the Enduro race only the downhill segments of the course are timed, and the uphills are mandatory but not timed. The Enduro race courses took place on Blue and Black trails.

The cross country race, which focusses more on distance and speed, was held at the Millennium Trail System, also in Powell River. The cross country was a challenging course which included Green and Blue trails with single-track trails, climbing, descending, traversing, and passing opportunities. This course was 7.3 km long with Senior Boys, Senior Girls, and Junior Boys riding three loops while the Junior Girls, Bantam Boys, and Bantam Girls rode two laps.

There were 131 racers in the senior boys’ division including Max Calkins, Keegan Millard, Dreysen Sherman, Reef Paetsch and Aiden Jamieson from Salmon Arm Secondary (SAS). There were 30 racers in the senior girls’ category including Teagan Currie, Aida Mills, Jayda Meerza, Bethany Henrie, Grace Foulger, Peyton Major and Sadie Stromgren, all of SAS.

There were 130 racers in the junior boys’ division including Ty Dunlop, Mattias Vandergrift, Kai Hansen and Jared Peterson of Jackson. In the junior girls’ category there were 35 racers including Brooke Inglis of Jackson.

There were 54 racers in the bantam boys’ division including Tye Major and Emmet Millard of Shuswap Middle School. Full results available here. Congrats riders!
