Trees for Hope
Over 2,000 seedlings will be planted by students as part of K̓wsaltktnéws ne Secwepemcúl’ecw School District No. 83’s 2025 Trees for Hope project! Students from 17 district schools, plus all our StrongStart programs, will fittingly receive the seedlings during Earth Week from April 21st to 25th.
Retired principal and avid environmentalist, Kim Fulton, helps coordinate the program. For over 18 years SD83 students have been given conifer seedlings to plant. These seedlings are donated from tree nurseries and forest companies from all over B.C. “We have access to trees again this year with the help of Kalamalka Forestry Research Centre,” said Fulton.
Fulton believes that many are feeling eco-anxiety as a result of worldwide disasters, wars, and local uncertainties like fires and floods. “Taking some sort of action helps relieve the feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. Planting trees is ONE action we can all take. I have never had anyone plant a tree and not feel good about it.”
“There are Canada Wide and World Wide initiatives to plant trees to sequester carbon and cool the planet,” adds Fulton.
The Trees for Hope project connects to the District’s Strategic Plan by promoting environmental stewardship.
