Volleyball Team Serves up Pancakes

Posted on 2024-10-22 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

The Pleasant Valley Secondary Junior A Girls Volleyball team showed their strong sense of community and teamwork off the court by hosting a successful pancake breakfast at the Harvest Pumpkin Festival in Armstrong on October 12, 2024.

Under the leadership of coach Adelle Celesta, the team’s efforts aligned with SD83’s Human and Social Development priority outlined in the District Strategic Plan 2023-2028 which emphasizes fostering a sense of belonging. “Our whole team was in attendance for the event, along with a large group of very supportive parents, which was fabulous,” shared Celesta. The team was raising funds for team expenses such as hoodies, hotel costs for attending tournaments, and hopefully a team dinner.

Following a late evening shopping excursion for groceries, the morning began early with players and their families braving the cold to make signs, set up tables and chairs, wrap cutlery, and prepare pancake batter. They worked tirelessly throughout the day, advertising the breakfast, collecting donations, cleaning up, and delivering meals to festival vendors. Their contributions to the festival went beyond serving breakfast, as they also shared information about the various festival activities (farmers market, chainsaw artist, children’s festivities, pumpkin launch, among other things).

“Despite the cold and the early start, the girls worked hard and maintained a positive attitude the entire time. Family members came together to shop, provide supplies, transport the grill, supervise the girls, and just help out where they could. Parents and coaches manned the grills, and a beautiful breakfast was enjoyed by the community,” Celesta proudly shared.

The day was a success, with the whole team and their family members having a lot of fun. They are already making plans to expand their involvement in the event next year and to invite the Senior Girls to join in on the fun.

Thank you to the supportive family members who helped make this event a success, as well as to the Legion for providing the use of their grill. A special thanks goes to Chad and Robyn McCaw of McCaw’s Drilling and Blasting for generously donating all the supplies and groceries. “Their amazing donation made the event even more successful for our team and we wish to send them a huge thank you from the whole team,” said Celesta.

Coaches Celesta and Gurak, along with senior player/coaches Georgia Stowards and Presley Celesta, have focused on improving serve receive, accurate passing, and consistent serving throughout the season. The coaches are so impressed by the growth and comradery that has been shown by each and every player on the team.

The PVSS Jr A Girls Volleyball Team will be competing against Seaton, Vernon Secondary School, and Kalamalka Secondary on Thursday night at Kalamalka Secondary starting at 5 p.m. Despite being an away game, the team’s dedicated fans are known for bringing “home-game energy” to the stands, filling them with spirit, cheering, and support.
