Wrestlers win at Okanagans

Posted on 2023-02-15 08:00:00 +0000 UTC

The Jackson wrestling team, which features all Grade 9s brought home top spot in both the girls and boys team events at the Okanagan high school wrestling regionals at Kelowna Secondary School on February 11th!

Greg Seed, who coaches the high school team (comprised of Shuswap Middle School, Jackson, and Sullivan students) with Gerry Beauregard, said they were very proud of all of their wrestlers and their performances. “Our wrestlers hard work paid off. All of the Jackson and Sullivan wrestlers qualified for the provincials,” added Seed. The provincials are being held at the Pacific National Exhibition February 23-25. The high school wrestling national championships are in Vancouver March 23-25.

Seed adds that he is not sure how many of the local wrestlers will compete at the provincials (all top three placings qualify) as wrestlers compete in weight, not age, divisions and many of the qualifying wrestlers are only in Grade 9, so their opponents could have up to three more years of wrestling experience.

There were 17 wrestlers taking part on the high school team with two from SMS, nine from Jackson, and six from Sullivan.
Jackson claimed the gold medal in the boys and girls team event. The individual medal winners are as follows:

  • Noah Vannieuwenhuizen – Bronze
  • Cole Wright – Bronze
  • Owen Roy – Bronze
  • Carter Schmidt – Silver
  • Tayden Lafortune – Silver
  • Ginger Anderson – Silver
  • Keira Jaegar – Gold
